I stumbled across this video just after I got home from hospital and i'm so glad I found it. This functional medicine doctor is also a nutritionist and a chiropractor. He explains the benefits of getting your daily vitamin D and how our bodies process it. He also carefully explains why vitamin D is so integral for people with autoimmune diseases like MS. He breaks everything down in to really easy to understand chunks of information helped with visuals along the way.
This is information is especially important for those of you with office jobs, the benefits of getting out for a walk at lunch time could save you a lot of health bills down the track. I remind my boyfriend to get outside in the sun at lunch time as much as he can, all you need is 15 to 20 minutes daily on as much skin as possible.
I take walks daily to get my exercise and sunshine and I also take a vitamin D3 supplement. Also if you’re going to supplement make sure your taking Vitamin D3 not D2 as Vitamin D2 is synthetic and the type doctors usually prescribe oddly enough. But all you need to do is sit in the sun to reap the benefits.
Also sitting inside doesn't work as glass filters out UVB rays. If your worried about getting burnt you can wear the Solar D suncreen in the products section of my blog. But you don’t have to go out in the hottest part of the day to reap the rewards either.
I always wear sunblock on my face and a hat but I let my body soak up the sun especially when I’m out walking. Sometime I put a little sunblock on the back of my neck and tops of my shoulders as they are prone to catching the sun. Otherwise my legs and arms are free to soak up all the vitamin D they want. If I’m at the beach after about 20 minutes I apply sunscreen or when I feel like I’d get burnt.
I also only stay down at the beach for a few hours at a time.
