F L A X S E E D - the best omega's for MS
In a recent study Dr Jelinek conducted called The Holism Study which showed that people taking Flaxseed Oil as opposed to Fish Oil actually did better reducing relapse rates by 60%. It also showed a more frequent consumption of fish and omega 3 fatty acid supplementation is strongly associated with improved quality of life, reduced disease activity and disability.
The benefits of taking omegas are really an essential part of the OMS program. Dr Jelinek talks in his book "Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis" about Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids and how they literally affect the inflammatory response in our bodies as below.
"The immune system produces an array of chemicals which act as messengers, promoting and suppressing inflammation...there is a bewildering array or these chemicals but mostly they belong to the classes of cytokines and eicosanoids...some of these cytokines promote inflammation, that is they are part of the (Th1 response), and some suppress it (Th2 response).
Recent research has shown that people with MS who are challenged with myelin base protein secrete more of the Th1 protein type cytokines than people without MS. What is really interesting is that many of the chemical messengers are made from essential fatty acids. Eicosanoids are a class of unsaturated fatty acids derived from dietary essential fatty acids...they can promote or suppress inflammation.
In recent years there has been a great advance in our understanding of these pathways, and the effects of these messengers. From the point of view of people with MS, it is important to realise that omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are converted into messenger chemicals which act in different often opposing ways. This is an indication to their effects of altering the structure and behaviour of cell membranes, making them more fluid and flexible. Eating more of one or the other types of polyunsaturated fats therefore can shift the immune response more towards a Th1 or Th2 response...
...Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to decrease production of messengers which promote inflammation, and increase those which settle inflammation down, moving the immune system to a Th2 state. Omega-6 seem to do the opposite..."
It was also interesting to see in an article on the OMS website that in a recent study in Barcelona, it showed that taking flaxseed oil may decrease your risk of developing MS all together.
So with the results of the HOLISM study in mind I switched to taking Flaxseed Oil as well as eating fish as normal. I bought a good quality organic flaxseed oil which i've been putting in my smoothie bowls or drizzling over my sourdough daily and I'm sure I have more energy. Fish oil was starting to make me really nauseous and taking all those pills was hard work. I highly recommend using pure certified organic flaxseed oil in liquid form as it is easier for your body to absorb and easier for you to take with other food. Right now I'm using the brand Melrose here in Australia, however i've heard that Stoney Creek is also fantastic and the brand Dr Jelinek uses himself. Whenever i'm in New Zealand I always buy the Waihi Bush brand, I've used it for years and its also fantastic and certified organic.
When buying Flaxseed Oil always buy a good quality brand from the fridge of your health food store. Never buy it off the shelf or from an uneducated source like the supermarket as it oxidises and goes rancid quickly. It should never be heated, and always kept in the fridge and used cold.
